In case you don't know anything about baseball here's a quick crash course on one of it's biggest urban legends.
This year the Chicago Cubs are in the playoffs. Each win is one step closer to breaking "the billy goat curse," dating back to 1945. Alright, so the Cubbies haven't won a world series since before 1906, but that has nothing to do with this story.
It's 1945, Wrigley Field, game 4 of the world series against the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs win the first three and need this last game to win the title.
Billy Sianis owns the nearby Billy Goat Tavern. He's a Greek immigrant, and had a pair of $7.20 box tickets to the game. Who's his date? His pet goat Murphy decked in "We got Detroit's goat" banner. Sianis and Murphy are allowed to enter the stadium and even parade around the field before the game.
Some of the ushers don't like the goat in the stadium though, but after a heated argument with Wrigley Field's head of security the goat is allowed to stay.
It's later in the game, the Cubs are up and it starts to rain. Philip Knight Wrigley, owner of the Cubs (and the chewing gum), throws Sianis and his pet out of the stadium because the wet goat smells.
Sianis leaves but places a curse that the Cubs will never win another pennant or World Series while the Cubs were at Wrigley Field because they insulted his goat.
The Cubs lose game 4, 5, 6 and 7 - losing the World Series that year, and never winning one since. Just to kick some dirt in Wrigley's face Sianis sent a letter to Wrigley from Greece after his team lost the World Series reading "Who stinks now?"
There have been many attempts to break the curse, but as of yet it the curse stands. Some say that a goat has to be let into the stadium without the direct intention of breaking the curse. Billy Sianis's nephew-in-law Sam Sianis has paraded around the field with a goat a few times hoping to break the curse. Others say the curse has something to do with playing the Tigers.
Nothing has worked yet. The cubs haven't won a World Series in over a hundred years. Maybe they should just build a new stadium since the curse applies only to Wrigley Field.
