Spider Named after David Bowie
Spider expert Peter Jäger has discovered a new species of arachnid in Malaysia and named it heteropoda davidbowie. Yes, it was named in an odd tribute to the performer David Bowie. The spider is bright yellow and very hairy - but it wasn't named for its resemblance to Ziggy Stardust. Many of the spiders Jäger has discovered are endangered, and he hopes that by naming the new species after celebrities, he will attract public attention and publicity for their plight. It's actually pretty fitting, as Bowie has an album named The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. He shares the honor with Jakob von Uexkull, founder of the Right Livelihood Award, and Nina Hagen, a German punk singer, who also have spiders named after them.
