Grand Theft Auto IV sells over $500 million

In its first week on the market, Grand Theft Auto IV sales topped $500 million, surpassing the $400 million in first-week sales for last year's "Halo 3."

Take-Two Interactive Software said it sold around 3.6 million units of the game globally when it debuted April 29, and approximately 6 million units in its first week out.

"Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date," said Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two Interactive Software, in a statement.

In the game, the player is cast as an Eastern European immigrant who falls into a crime syndicates and becomes a drug-runner who shoots police officers and beats up prostitutes.

It has received near-universal accolades and was hailed as a brutal and satirical masterpiece comparable to "The Godfather" and similar films.
